Mel Showers, Mobile, Alabama, longtime news anchor has died

Mel Showers, as a longtime news anchor for Mobile, has passed away. Over the course of his fifty-year career at WKRG, Showers was the station’s primary anchor beginning in 1980 and continuing until his retirement in 2019. After that, he was honoured with the title of Journalist of Distinction by the National Association of Black Journalists and was inducted into the Alabama Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

He was a native of Mobile and attended Central High School and the University of South Alabama, where he received his respective degrees. Additionally, he was a member of the United States Air Force and worked in the military intelligence branch. In addition to this, Showers was a pioneer in the Gulf Coast region, being one of the first black anchors to operate there.
